An interesting article comparing the moral stand of the Spanish government today with how it was 30 years ago.

30 years ago Spain was one of the strictest Catholic states existing, now gay marriage, expedited divorce and a very liberal sense of morality form a part of the current government’s agenda. The article does a fantastic job of highlighting the contradictions that have developed in Spanish society in the last 30 years and is well worth the read.

Some Kind of Ruckus

AKA, “A Spanish Midnight Fiesta”

All night I’ve been hearing some kind of big gathering or party just down the street. Sounds like a lot of people are having a lot of fun. At one point they were all singing something, then clapping, cheering, and just a minute ago there were loud noises from what could have been fireworks. (All the neighborhood dogs had to start barking at the noises of course, but by now they’ve subsided considerably.)

It’s after midnight but I don’t think the party will die down anytime soon. Yup, they’ve just started up again with the singing. I suppose I can either go to bed with my windows shut and my ipod playing, or walk down the street to go join them!

Feria in Town

The local feria (fair) is in town! Every city has one, it seems; the larger cities have much larger events, but even in our area there are at least two that take place in July, not to mention the official Málaga feria in August.

Expensive feria food, flamenco dancing, live music, fair rides with loud pulsing music and flashing lights…all a part of the yearly fair. The experience is kind of overwhelming at first, but if you can find a seat near one of the performance stages, the music and dancing is well worth a visit.

The noise, however, can be a bit much. Even though we live quite a ways away, sound does carry! Every night we hear voices from the loudspeakers, and even music. I can’t imagine living right next door to the fairgrounds!!

The partying usually starts in the evening and carries on well into the early hours of the morning for each day of the feria.

Spain Celebrates a victory

Last night was a great victory for Spain: their first win in a major futbol (soccer) tournament since Euro 1964!

As BBC news reports, “Spain claimed their first major title for 44 years after winning Euro 2008 with a deserved victory over Germany.” Read about it here.

Soccer fans or not, it was great fun watching the game on a projector screen with a huge group at MMC last night.

Join in the Spanish celebration by watching this short video clip we took after the win. Also good is another video clip of the celebration in Granada.

The honking, flag waving, and driving in circles continued well into the early hours of the morning.

“Holy Week” in Málaga

This week is Semana Santa - Holy Week - the week leading up to Easter.

Throughout the week there will be processions (grand, solemn, penitent parades) from the different churches in Malaga, most of which pass by the central Cathedral in the downtown area. The processions started this weekend - we even saw one on Friday night when we were coming home from the downtown area - and will continue throughout the week, ending on Resurrection Sunday.

Please pray for the many Spaniards involved in this event: those who are taking part in the processions (whether in marching bands, walking alongside, or carrying one of the two gigantic thrones holding statues of Mary and Jesus) as well as the hundreds of others who will assemble to watch each procession. May the Lord open their eyes to the truth of His glorious resurrection which overcomes both the sadness of his death and the bondage of tradition, on which the focus seems to be so prevalent here.
